A DMZ day trip from Seoul: Yeoncheon

Yeoncheon is one of the few DMZ border areas you can reach by train from Seoul. Unlike a Panmunjeom tour, no application or military escort is required — you can freely explore Goguryeo relics and dramatic river scenery along the Imjin River.

Getting there
Seoul Metro Line 1 to Yeoncheon
Payment
Some sites and eateries are cash-oriented
Best season
Spring/autumn; sunflowers at Horogoru in summer

Getting there

Seoul Metro Line 1 (toward Yeoncheon) runs directly to Yeoncheon Station — about 1.5 to 2 hours from central Seoul.

From the station, use the county shuttle bus or a taxi to reach each site. The sights are spread out, so it helps to plan your route in advance.

A one-day itinerary

Morning: Horogoru — a Goguryeo fortress on the red cliffs above the Imjin River, with sweeping views over the water and plains.

Lunch: local restaurants in the Jeongok / Yeoncheon town area.

Afternoon: Jaein Falls — a waterfall in a basalt columnar-jointing canyon, seen from an observation deck. Add the Jeongok Prehistory Museum for Paleolithic history.
